Tights Denier Guide: 5D, 20D, 40D, 80D & 200D
Denier is a useful clue to how a pair of tights will look. Lower numbers usually produce a lighter, more translucent finish; higher numbers generally move towards fuller coverage.

Read the range, not just the number
The 5D style is ultra-sheer; 12D and 15D are sheer. At 20D and 40D the range moves into semi-opaque finishes, with 40D giving more visible colour. The 80D and 120D styles are opaque, while 200D is the thick option in this edit. Plus-size 30D and 60D offer semi-opaque and opaque choices respectively.
Technically, denier measures the weight of a length of yarn. It does not measure a pair's exact warmth or guarantee its durability: construction, colour, fit and wear all matter too. Use the number to narrow the look, then check the product images and size guide.
Quick answer: If you only buy one to begin, 40D is a strong all-round starting point.
